Serbia Protesters Demand Eurovision Withdrawal Over Israel

(MENAFN) Demonstrators gathered outside the headquarters of Serbia's national broadcaster in Belgrade on Tuesday, demanding the country pull out of the Eurovision Song Contest in protest over Israel's continued inclusion in the competition.

Assembled in front of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), protesters argued that Serbian participation in the contest would effectively constitute tacit endorsement of Israel's conduct toward Palestinians. Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags throughout the rally, calling on both government authorities and RTS to formally withdraw from the event.

In a written statement, protest organizers went further, urging the broadcaster to redirect its programming toward coverage of Palestine rather than devoting resources to Eurovision participation.

The Belgrade demonstration reflects a widening international pushback against Israel's inclusion in the 2026 contest. Slovenia, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Iceland have each already announced their withdrawal from the competition on the same grounds, adding significant momentum to calls for a broader boycott.

The pressure places Serbia and other remaining participating nations in an increasingly uncomfortable position as the contest approaches, with the roster of withdrawing countries likely to grow further amid sustained international criticism of Israel's actions in Palestinian territories.
